The Make A Wish people are always so very gracious and thankful when we work with them. This was our first "re-do" car for a MAW kid and we have to say...we would do it a thousand times over. It's nice to give back to the community as well as help a person in need, especially a kid. :)

He came to "take a look" at it this morning, he's been in about a handful of times throughout the build and he's loved every second of it, so he expected this morning to be no different. That is until he noticed his family, and the cheery blue shirted MAW volunteers. He instantly knew what was going on... and he was ear to ear.

In typical teenage fashion he was very reserved and quiet, but you could tell from his smile and inability to look away from the grey beauty in front of him that he was shocked, most likely still is.

congrats on your new car! oh, and don't run it into anything will you?? :D

due to our upcoming projects that are being finished, like i'm talking we have four nearing completion show cars, we have been a bit..shall we say..BUSY!

It's ok though, we like it that way. We have currently a 57 chevy, a 70 chevelle, a 55 chevy, and a 69 camaro that are all jockeying for position to be first one completed. It's looking like the big yellow 57 is closest to that point right now. Followed by the 69 Camaro.

We have also been working on a Make A Wish car, which makes us feel proud and fulfilled that we can help this amazing organization in any way. We did an auction to benefit them during the TV show and they were so very gracious and thankful, they truly are the best organization.

We will have photos of all of our projects here in a minute!

not so mellow yellow

Has anyone ever noticed how much chrome is on a 57 Bel Air? Let me enlighten you.. ALOT! I had more colorful words for "alot" but, since this is a public blog..you know.

I so graciously said I would help my dad put the trim and things on the yellow 57 we are building at the moment. it's fun, entertaining, and frustrating all in the same sentence and...rewarding! I love seeing the cars finished and to know that I had a hand in then is cool too. I'm normally the parts fetcher, I get a list of "man speak" and I decipher it into something that makes sense and order it from the appropriate company. So a break from the computer is always nice, and knowing that my dad is just around the corner incase something doesn't fit right and I need his expert advice helps too.

Aren't family business' fun!? :)

Make a wish

We have been working on a Make A Wish car for a while. A high schooler came in and wanted his 1965 Mustang Coupe redone so he could drive it his senior year. Wish granted my man! We were happy to help!

His list of wishes were: a new paint job, new wheels, new radio, interior, and a brake check up.

We will have more formal photos of it later today but here is a snippit of what it looks like after a fresh coat of paint and new american racing wheels!

It's seriously been FORVER since I've written anything on this poor blog. I apologize and I'm going to do my best to keep it up from now on.

We have been making LEAPS and BOUNDS on Jeff Finger's "Power Play" it's painted, and rapidly nearing completion. It's being wired as we speak.

As you might know, they are playing re-runs of our TV show, thanks Discovery, we love it when we get some air time! Be sure to revisit all of our SMC's as well as our daily shop antics every Wednesday and Sunday on Discovery HD Theater! Check your local listings for solid times.

Chevrolet's LSIII

One of our customers has been tossing around the idea of putting one of Chevy's new LSIII motors in his ride, and we are all for it.

Several thousand dollars later it was here. Now let me tell you, when you have a shop full of gear heads like we do a wooden crate tends to cause a feeding frenzy.

Never the less, Chevy has outdone themselves with this motor. It comes with every part you could think of to install it and have it run with the first turn of the key. Not to mention that it's a pretty nice piece to look at as well. We will have install videos, photos and tech pieces to come in the following days.

Today we are "unwrapping" our early christmas gift. We will have videos of this as well later today.

It's halloween on sunday, what are we doing? nothing. the shops closed and I'm sure our employees will be out prowling partys or terrorizing kids tick or treating. I'm kidding, well not about the us being closed part... but anyway.

GOODGUYS MUSCLE MACHINE OF THE YEAR!

Dennis DeCamp and his Barry's Speed Shop built "John Henry" Mustang fastback was named the 2010 GoodGuys Muscle Machine of the Year! We are more than honored for GoodGuys to bestow this title on a car that we built, and beyond excited for Dennis to be the owner!

This is the third "of the year" title we have won under GoodGuys and we are thrilled! In 2000 Richard Berg and his AMBR winning "Impact" won the Street Rod of the year title, and we did it again in 2007 with Dennis DeCamp's AMBR Contender "F-32".

There is talk that Dennis wants to build another car and chase the GoodGuys Hot Rod of the Year award, but we will neither confirm or deny this. :)

To further prove that we don't just build "trailer queens" Dennis has driven his Mustang to every event he's taken it to, and we are pretty proud of that red rocket.

It's been a while since we posted something...ANYTHING really on this blog deal. We apologize, really, we do.

We have had projects come and go out of our shop, some general repairs, some not so minor, but we are plugging along non-the-less.

I'll post photos tomorrow of the project cars we are currently working on.

What a Week!

As you all know, the Fourth of July fell on a Sunday this year. Banks, the post office and quite a few others decided that Monday the 5th should be a holiday too...but not for us! And it was a good thing we came to work, we picked up 4 new cars to work on because their owners got the day off. The economy is definitely picking up, if the LA Roadster's Father's Day show is anything to go by. It was the biggest and busiest we'd ever seen it and we had a great weekend catching up with everyone. We like to say the Father's Day show is like a homecoming - everyone comes just to see people they only see once a year!

Another new development is we've been invited back to the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational held the weekend after SEMA. We'll be taking our new 2010 Mustang, which is getting her "Super Muscle Car" transformation as we speak. I'll post photos as we go.

A motorcycle no more...

I know last time I graced this blog, that I put shame on Chevrolet for making their V6 Camaro sound like a motorcycle off the line. I know that the the environment people keep the newly formed muscle cars from sounding like their predecessors, and I understand why, but when you sound like a yamaharley when you drive away, and you work where I work..it's not exactly the sexiest thing around.

Enter Magnaflow. Their kits NEVER let us down and they are just the best people. period. They have a Cat-Back system for the V6. SCORE! :)

Ready. set go. This is the ONLY way to get the back half of the exhaust out. I promise.

Notice that I was the ONLY one reading the instructions. (men.)

Unclamp it, saw it, and yank it out.

The Cat-Back V6 system in all it's glory.

Compared to the yamaharley sounding stock exhaust. yikes.

Time to put the Magnaflow system in!!

No. This is NOT product placement. However, Magnaflow did provide the exhaust. :)

Gotta give credit where credit is do riiight? Right.

The entire install from start to finish took and hour and a half, which is super quick. The guys made it look easy and simple, which they have said it was. We recommend any of their systems for any vehicle you might have.

the camaro gets stripes...

Well, I did it. I made a five year commitment to a little red Camaro this Memorial Day. As much fun as it was to drive stock, I started seeing myself on the freeway, not in red..but in grey, in black, in white. So I figured it was time to make my Camaro a little different. Stripes right? Naturally. What color? Black.

Ok. Easy enough, I'll get a sticker kit from the factory and it will be just enough different to set me apart from the sea of Camaros stalking the streets. Wrong. Not only do they want $800 for vinyl stripes but EVERYONE and their mother has them too. Solution? Paint them on, after all we do have a paint shop in the same building and said paint shop owner owes this girl a favor or two.

So, it's decided. We paint them on. Why? For one, we can make them any shape, size, or variation that we want. Two, NO ONE driving a Camaro with stripes will have MY stripes.

I like this. ALOT. :)

PPG is our friend, and my friend in this case, which is why we are using their fabulous paint to spray the stripes with.

To anyone wanting to paint on stripes. Be prepared for AT LEAST 3 hours of tape and prep.

This handle will be the downfall of the mob.

SO. everything is taped up, and ready to go...well..maybe not.

Three hours of laying out stripes will do this to you. I didn't ever want to look at blue tape again.

hahaha...If I get fisheyes in my stripes because of you.....

Ok. your safe this time, only cause they had to wipe it off.

FINALLY! paint. Guess what it took mayybee 10 mins. ugh.

Lets not forget the deck-lid Stripes!

40 Mins and a carl's cheeseburger later it was time to pull the tape on the stripes. woot!!

DONE! well, the spoiler is missing, it's painted too..

Now tell me, who has those stripes besides me? NO ONE! I like those odds. :)

Next up on the seemingly never-ending list of things to do to my little red wonder is the exhaust. Chevrolet, I love you, but you should be ashamed to let your V6 Camaro sound like a motorcycle. Shame.

Magnaflow Performance Exhaust is the best, hands down, and we will be installing their V6 cat-back system on my Camaro next.

Moving Day!

Not for us, but for our paint shop. Barry's been trying to convince Tony and our accountant that it would make more financial sense to move the paint shop into our building, and for five years they've been fighting it...but all of a sudden it's their idea and it's a GREAT one. So now we are condensing our 10,000 sq. ft of cars, machinery and assorted parts and pieces so we can fit the spray booth and all Tony's acoutrements in here. Who knew one could accumulate so much stuff in 5 short years? I see several days of long hours in my future...and another week running into the next. All in all, it will be a move that will benefit all of us, so I'd better go get busy.

I don't know how many of you know just how we became "Barry's Speed Shop". From the emails we get, most people think we only do a tv show, but we are so much more than that. Barry grew up in a drag racing family and always loved working on cars. Talk about a kid having a passion for something...it was always all about the cars. I'll have to find some of the pictures of him with his dad and brother and put them up here...my favorite shows them stuffing a big block Chevy in a Nash Metro. By the time we started dating, he'd already had 3 or 4 cars - and those were just cars he drove, not counting the race cars. Our Friday night dates consisted of us working on the race car of the moment so we could go race on Saturday. After we were married, we continued racing until all the local tracks were shut down. That's when we took a look at it and decided to get into the hot rods.

Our business started out in a 400 square foot garage in our backyard, and we worked nights, weekends and holidays to make it all happen. What started out as just doing work for friends grew, through word of mouth, to what we are today. I'm not saying it was easy...it was a long, rocky road that strained our nerves, our finances, and at times, our marriage, but we hung in there and today we've feel we've built a damn fine business. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to do the tv show, and we don't regret doing it for a single minute. Would we do it again? Possibly, as long as it's all about the cars and not about drama...I don't know about you, but I hate all the yelling and arguing that some of the other shows are all about. And it's weird and cool at the same time to have people recognize us. It's one thing to be at a car show and have them do it, because you expect it there, but it happens wherever we are...whether we're in San Diego for the weekend or in Arizona for Angels spring training, or even just out for dinner in a local restaurant - it's "Hey Barry, I love your show!"

We appreciate every one of our fans and customers - without you guys, we wouldn't be here! Thanks to all of you!!

As I took a look at my last post, it hit me that I didn't really give a lot of info about the event. So here it is:

What is the E-Rod LS3 Crate Engine?

SEMA challenged the GM Performance Parts Team to develop an emission compliant high performance crate engine which could be legally registered in the state of California under the new laws passed to begin in January 2010. The GM Performance Parts Team introduced a California emission compliant LS3 Engine and is now available for immediate purchase as a complete crate engine application.

The team at GM Performance parts are taking this new crate motor on tour around California to introduce it to the public, and our shop is scheduled for May 1st. Please come by and take a look at this new motor, and tour our shop as well! It's free...and you even get food.

Rainy Saturday

Just wanted to let you all know about another event at our shop - Saturday May 1st we will be hosting the GM LS3 crate motor traveling show...I know sounds kinda funny but it should be a cool deal. We'll have lunch and dessert for anyone who wants to show up and see the newest GM motor...but let me know ahead of time if you want to come so I have an idea of how much to make...

Could It Be?

I can't say too much, but there just might be a new show in the works...we'll keep you posted on that.

Barry and I snuck away last weekend and took a little road trip. As we're driving, he says, out of the blue, "Let's go see where Barona Raceway is". So I pull out the magic phone, get directions, and we're on our way. Now for those of you who haven't been there, it's a loooooong way from anywhere. The directions actually read "Take the road until it ends and turn right". Ok, we did that, and then followed that road until we came to the Barona Resort and Casino, which is a huge, gorgeous complex smack dab in the middle of....nowhere. But wait, the drag strip is 5 miles past the casino. Good thing it is beautiful country...huge oak trees, rolling green hills and impressive homes. The strip was closed, but from what we could see it looks like a cool little track. We'll be making the pilgrimage there with our race car later this year. PS - I really need to get on the ball about keeping my camera with me...could have gotten some cool shots to include here...DUH

Another event to add to our calendar - Saturday June 12, Rods and Hogs Poker Run will be stopping by our shop as one of their checkpoints. This run sounds like it would be a lot of fun - I love the driving aspect of it, way more fun than just sitting in a parking lot with the hood open! Rods and Hogs benefits the Ovarian Cancer Orange County Alliance, and $35 (before May 31st) gets ya a T-shirt, goodie bag and a meal ticket. Sounds like a great time, and it's a great cause too!

Been Way Too Long

Things have been busy around here...so busy in fact we haven't blogged since November. Our last blog was about the GTO we built for the Optima Battery Challenge held the Saturday after SEMA, and Barry and I didn't even get to go! I had some health issues and ended up in the hospital two days before the event and was away from the shop for almost a month. I'm fine now and rarin' to get back into things.

We finished Dennis DeCamp's '70 Mustang for the Grand National Roadster show in Pomona, where the car was so well received it won several awards and garnered numerous magazine covers. I'll have some pics of it next blog.

Some other projects we have in the works now include a '69 Camaro for Toronto Maple Leafs player Jeff Fingers, a '66 Chevelle for repeat customer Kent Matranga, a '68 Charger for Monaco resident (yep, just like Grace Kelly) Mark Traglio and a twin turbo charged '55 Chevy for Kent's dad Bob Matranga.

We do more than just build cars...we maintain them too. At any given time we have a handful of cars in the shop for engine swaps, power windows, air conditioning or just a tune up. If your car's been sitting all winter, bring it by and we'll give it a once over to make sure it's in top shape for the upcoming car show season!

Speaking of car shows, we will be at the Goodguys Del Mar show April 9 to 11 and the LA Roadster's Father's Day show at Pomona Fairplex June 19 & 20. Stop by and visit us!

Well folks.. the GTO is done...it was assembled in three weeks. INSANE!

Why you ask? cause we are crazy..no,no.. in all actuality, we love to build cars, and if that means burning the midnight oil with pizza and a drop light..then so be it.

The GTO arrived at SEMA yesterday and will be on display all week starting tomarrow, then it's going to the Optima Ultimate Street Challenge on Saturday.

Word has it some of the contestants are already on the track...but...we aren't worried..they will have to have some serious ca hones to keep up with this goat.

it's down to the wire

SORRY!

i know i promised that this would be a daily occurrence..but honestly, easier said then done. so please don't throw stones at me!

The GTO is coming along great..it has till sunday morning before it gets on the trailer for SEMA and it hasn't fired yet. this is nothing new to us..we have built cars in 4 weeks...a few in 3 weeks...we won't go there..those were some dark times.

I know you don't come on here to listen to me talk so I will hold you up no longer.

I got to work this morning with high hopes of the GTO frame all together. Unfortuanly life got in the way at the shop this weekend, and we didn't have the chance to get everything we wanted to done.

I'll post photos as soon as I hear a wrench is moving on the frame...but until then,

seeing the light at the end of the tunnel..

Now when they decided to take the perfectly good GTO and remove it from it's frame, in the short time frame we have mind you, I was worried, they were worried, all of us were worried. Alas, it was past the point of no return and once it's there you have to keep looking forward. At that point all I could do was point skyward and say "please help us."

When I pulled up into the parking lot this morning I saw a sparkling new frame, mind you, I see lots of these every day so it didn't register right away that Embee had picked up, cleaned, scrubbed, AND powder coated the GTO frame in less than a day and a half....

They are supermen.

Now that the frame is back, the guys will attack it like a pack of dogs on a three legged cat to get all the new suspension, brakes, and what have you on it so it can be placed back under the GTO body, which is perched sadly on our lift at the moment.

it didn't stand a chance..

the GTO is offically apart, it's a nothing body with a different frame under it at the moment, and it's all hands on deck to get it ready to roll by the Optima Challenge on November 7th. We have been informed that we are the ONLY Pontiac admid the sea of Camaros that will be attending so that means we need to step it up to represent for all of our awesome Pontiac fans out there.

we will post photos of the hulk this afternoon when they are done cleaning it up.

We're Going to PARUMP!

We have been invited to go to the Optima Battery Ultimate Street Challenge for the second year in a row, but this time... we're bringing out the big guns.

ohhh yeahh.

Rember that sweet little GTO that we had sitting in the back of the shop? well over labor day weekend, if you didn't get to attend The Great Labor Day Cruise in Costa Mesa, CA, the Barry's Speed Shop crew and the overly generous crew of Global West Suspension took the barley street legal convertable and turned it into a full blown road race car with the help of MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust, BendPak, PPG, QA1, ABS Brake, and Speed Shop Custom Paint it shaved a whole second off of it's previous stock time out on the AutoCross track. Curb feelers and all.

Now, to get back on track. No pun intended... We will be at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Park in Pahrump Nevada the weekend after SEMA.

Labor Day Cruise

If you haven't been to the Labor Day Cruise at the OC Fairgrounds lately, you NEED to go this year. The cruise has been around since 1981 with pretty much the same format, but this year we're spicing things up! Along with all day cruisin' on Cruise Lane, there's going to be a Road Challenge Autocross sponsored by Barry's Speed Shop and Global West Suspension, numerous car games like the Slo Drags, Find Your Rearend and Jousting, live bands all day both Saturday and Sunday, lots of really cool prizes and a participant's Kick Off Party on Friday night. Oh, and we're also going to have 5 Top Fuel Cackle Cars including Don Garlit's Swamp Rat - and they're going to start them up several times each day! Love the smell of Nitro in the morning... Cars can be registered day of event for the weekend or a single day (this is new this year) but camping is preregistration only and is almost sold out, so if you haven't registered yet, you better do it fast. This year promises to be quite exciting, so be sure to put it on your calendar - Orange County Fairgrounds, Labor Day weekend September 5 & 6. You can find online registration forms for both cars and camping spots at www.occa-inc.com. See ya there!

Making Progress

Ok, so I try to do this daily, but other stuff has gotten in the way this last week. I'll try to be better...

Anyway, we've been making progress on all our projects - everyone has a target date in mind and we're thrashing away to make sure they're all happy campers. We have Bob Matranga's '55 to the point where we can push it outside to take a good look at it and check the height and rake...and it is Awesome! There's still some metal work to be done, but it's getting closer to going to paint.

Just this week we brought in two '69 Camaros - each owner wanted a bigger motor, so we put together a deal to sell John's engine to Dieter, then John bought a monster motor - and we get to install both of them. We just love helping out customers like that...

The Blown Hemi Taxi is getting a suicide rear door so owner Richard Berg can get in and out easily and have a place to stow his wheelchair...he can't wait to drive it around Newport Beach! That should turn some heads.

The 2009 Mustang is just about ready to go - it's got a new Steeda Supercharger, new brakes, suspension, and a cowl hood plus a lot more. The guy who owns it lives up north and he can't wait to get down here and get in it so we can fit a rollbar...I think he wants to see how fast it'll go on those farm roads...

Lonnie Laster's roadster body got back from the paint shop yesterday, so we popped it back on the frame and started putting everything back together. The wheels and tires also came in this week and they look really good with the car. This car has the soonest deadline, so we'll be working on it practically nonstop for the next couple of weeks.

Adam fabricated a really cool aluminum cover for the engine compartment of Dennis DeCamp's '70 Mustang. We've also ordered a buttload (is that a real word?) of parts for his car so it should be coming together quickly as well. We got some really awesome hood hinges from Ring Brothers (I'll put pics of those up on Monday). They do a lot of R&D and produce some really cool parts...you should check them out.

Our Father's Day Weekend

As we have for the past 25 years, we spent Father's Day weekend at the LA Roadster show at the Pomona fairgrounds. We've had the same vendor spot under the shade cloth for all that time, but this year we thought we'd shake it up a bit, take our big rig out and park outside. It was definitely a good move, as we were able to get more cars in our booth, we had two canopies with chairs for customers and friends to hang out, and the added bonus of the living quarters in the trailer to eat our lunch in. The main purpose of going to shows like this is to connect with customers, both old and new, and show off any cool and/or new projects we've been working on. We spent plenty of time talking to fans of the TV show too - Barry even had to autograph a couple of pictures for people, which still makes him feel funny. He says "Why do these people want my signature, I'm just a normal guy". But it's a very cool thing to have people from all over the world come up to you and be so excited just to see you and talk to you for a few minutes. All in all, it was a good show, and we're looking forward to our next outing at the Great Labor Day Cruise, September 4-6 at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

ahhh Father's Day..

The smell of BBQ, the rumble of hot rods, the scorching heat...it must be Father's day!

Most normal families spend the day with dad at home, maybe go out to dinner. Not us! We like to spend it talking to our friends and customers out at the LA Roadster's Father's Day Show!! We normally have a booth under the shady sun cloth, but we decided to change it up this year and bring out the BIG rig. We are now situated along the "main street" and have quite a few cars in the booth.

Labor Day Cruise will also be in our booth signing up people for camping, vendors, and cars. Have you heard it's a ALL NEW SHOW this year?? you haven't? Well then, you need to visit www.occa-inc.com and see what all the buzz is about!!

Since this is our first "formal" post in the blog, I would like to introduce you to this cool new feature of our online experience. We will be posting EVERY DAY about the adventures and well.. the misadventures in the shop.
